At least a pass in Ordinary level Irish is a requirement for entry to many of Ireland’s top colleges. Also If you want to study primary teaching you will need at least a C3 in Higher level. It is recommended that if you do Higher Level at Leaving Certificate Level, you would have gotten at least a C in Junior Certificate.

In an effort to promote speaking Irish, as well as increase the number of people doing Higher Level, there is a greater emphasis placed on the oral exam.

Exam Layout?
– Bealtriail (The Oral/ speaking exam) 240 marks – 40%
– The Aural/listening exam 60 marks – 10%
– Two written papers 300 marks – 50%
– Paper one (Composition [Essay, Story, Article Speech], 2x Reading Comprehension) – 100marks
– Paper Two (Prose, Poetry, etc) – 200marks
